amaste readers! I'm Dr. Nidhi P, but you can just call me Nidhi. After retiring last year as the Head of Prosthodontics at the Government Dental College in Patiala, I've been happily settled here in my Chandigarh home. At 63, I'm enjoying this new phase of life with my family. I discovered GetSetUp on Facebook in 2021 and was delighted by their classes on finance, self-care, and more. I attended regularly in 2021 until my granddaughter was born and I got busier. Now that I'm retired, I've resumed my morning GetSetUp classes. For the past 7-8 months I've been diligently practicing yoga and walking to improve my flexibility and joint health. The meditation and pranayama sessions also help me feel more relaxed and at ease.
When I saw GetSetUp was hosting a yoga challenge, I knew it was the perfect chance to being more active and hopefully relieving some of the joint stiffness that comes with age. At this stage of life, I'm focused on overall wellbeing - physical, mental and spiritual. Chalo, let's get started on sharing my experience with all of you.
Discovering The Magic of Yoga
Before participating in the yoga challenge, my experience with yoga was limited. I had previously dabbled in Sudarshan Kriya, completing an introductory course that taught me simple exercises. I found those exercises beneficial and incorporated them into my routine. However, the GetSetUp yoga challenge exposed me to a broader range of practices, including pranayama, meditation, and restorative yoga. The classes were perfectly adapted for beginners. I found myself looking forward to my daily practice. The gentle movements and breathing exercises left me feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. The knowledgeable Guides like Guide Nishi, Guide Anjoo, Guide Sarita and Guide Dr. Divya provided excellent guidance. Their instructions helped me improve my flexibility and relieve my joint pain. I'll never forget Guide Dr. Divya's restorative yoga class - that deep relaxation was just what I needed!
The benefits went far beyond fitness. The pranayama and meditation sessions improved my mental state - I felt calmer and more patient. I even lost 2 kg in just 2 weeks! My family noticed the positive changes in my mood and behavior. I also now understand why Guide Bhavani advised avoiding morning tea. After following her tip for 1.5 months, I feel much better. We doctors don't learn much about diet, so her guidance was an eye-opener.
The personal touch from teachers like Dr. Divya made such a difference. When once she was sharing a story during a pranayama class and unexpectedly said, "See, Nidhi P is smiling." It was a heartwarming moment as she addressed me by name and made me aware of the involuntary smile on my face. Small moments like these made me feel seen and cared for.
Continuing My Practice
Engaging in the GetSetUp Yoga Challenge has been an incredibly transformative experience for me. It has not only improved my physical and mental well-being but also connected me with expert instructors and a supportive community of learners.
Now that the challenge is over, I'm still devoted to my yoga routine. I've booked more classes and can't wait to try new sessions like face yoga and Surya Namaskar. Yoga quickly became an integral part of my life. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to improve their wellbeing in mind, body and spirit!
