ith the older adult population increasing across India, raising awareness about healthy aging and nutrition among active agers 55 and above is at the heart of creating a framework for healthy aging. Decisions we make each day to nourish our bodies go beyond illness prevention; they help us stay active and maintain health.

As someone caring for aging parents myself, I understand the role nutrition plays in supporting their daily health and wellness. A report from NITI AAYOG underscores why this issue demands a collaborative, society-wide response. Their senior care reform findings reveal that nearly 12% of Indians are older adults, and this number is expected to reach 319 million by 2050, growing at around 3% per year. A nutritionally complete diet stands out as a baseline requirement, not just for physical health but for mental well-being, too. Good nutrition provides the energy needed to stay active, supports cognitive function, and helps maintain a higher quality of life. The report also emphasizes that without proper nutrition, the risk of chronic diseases and mental health issues like anxiety and depression increases significantly. Muscle mass declines by around 30% between 50 and 80, with muscle strength reducing by up to 50%. However, it's not just about what we eat but also how we eat. Many older adults face eating, chewing, or swallowing challenges, making it even more essential to tailor nutrition plans to individual needs.

While the statistics in the Senior Reforms Niti Aayog report clearly show the link between diet and health, they're only part of the story. What matters next is how we can take action together. By promoting positive health behaviors, leveraging modern technology, collaborating across sectors, and drawing on complementary strengths, we have an opportunity to chart a new precedent and empower our communities to live healthier, more fulfilling lives as they age.  Aligned with the broader initiative led by the Government of India and the theme of "Nutritious Diets for Everyone," GetSetUp is excited to host a series of impactful sessions and a nutrition challenge during National Nutrition Week, from September 1st to 7th.
