ets, with their unconditional love and unwavering loyalty, become members of our families and enhance our well-being. For many active agers, pets offer companionship, joy, and a sense of purpose, enriching our lives in countless ways. Today, on World Pet Day, we share two heartwarming stories from our GetSetUp, Geita C. and Dipti S. R., who have found joy, companionship, and a deeper family connection through their furry friends.
The Story of Zorro:
Geita C. shares the story of Zorro, a black Labrador who has become the center of her family's universe. “Nowadays, whenever I go out of town, I always remember to bring back a toy for him. He’s my constant companion, although he’s technically my son’s pet. We gifted him to my son on his birthday.” Named after the iconic character played by Antonio Banderas, Zorro has a special way of bringing everyone together, turning simple moments into lifelong memories, "He's the center of our family. He's the one who has brought our family closer and created greater bonds. We sit around him, discuss his antics, play with him, and discuss other things. Earlier, everyone would go to their rooms and remain preoccupied."
Geita further recounts how her kids think she is more partial to him, “If by chance, I bump into him or stamp his foot, I keep saying sorry to him and petting him. My daughter complains that I never do anything like this with them when I accidentally stamp their foot. So yes, our Universe revolves around him!" Geita's story illustrates how pets are much more than animals living under the same roof; they are the glue that binds family members together, sparking conversations, laughter, and unity.
The Story of Laltu:
Dipti S. R. narrates the story of her 8-year-old pet, Laltu, an indie dog whose life became entwined with hers in a story that sounds almost destined to be. “We named him Laltu on adoption. According to the saying that one year for a dog is equivalent to seven years for a human, he's reached the age of 56, while I'm 54. He's not just a pet; he's my closest companion, bringing immense joy into my life. Our story with him began back in 2017 during the morning walks with my husband. Each day, we noticed this dog following us, almost as if eagerly awaiting our company. One day, we decided to change our route and have yet to notice him again. However, fate had other plans, as my daughter stumbled upon him later, and he began following her home. Soon enough, he became a regular visitor to our household, brightening our afternoons with his presence."
Dipti continues to share their deeper journey with Laltu, highlighting the challenges and the unbreakable bond formed through adversity. "Tragedy struck when, after two years, my daughter found him in a pitiful state, injured from an accident. We nursed him back to health, but he disappeared once more, leaving us worried for his well-being. Then, amidst the global lockdown in 2020, we heard his familiar howl at our back gate, seeking shelter and companionship during lockdown. From that day forward, he became a constant fixture in our lives, faithfully visiting us every afternoon. Despite his occasional getaways, he eventually returned to us with a grievous wound on his ear, prompting us to seek medical attention. Since then, he's never left our side, becoming an integral part of our family, and that’s when we decided to adopt him because we felt he was ready for it. Throughout the challenging times we faced in 2021 and 2022, particularly with our daughter's health issues and the pandemic, his unwavering presence provided us with solace and comfort. My husband often remarks that Laltu seemed to possess an innate understanding of when we needed him most, appearing at our doorstep when our spirits needed lifting and not leaving us exactly when we needed him. He's become a pampered pooch, craving attention at every turn yet strictly opposed to bath time. Each hug exchanged with him feels like therapy, and we remain endlessly grateful for his unwavering loyalty and affection."
Laltu's story is touching. It unfolds during personal struggles and the global pandemic, highlighting the comfort and peace pets bring during challenging times. His instinctive ability to be there in moments of sadness, joyful returns, and unwavering loyalty, especially during Dipti's daughter's health challenges, showcases the incredible support and love pets give us.
The stories of Zorro and Laltu are but two examples of the incredible impact pets have on our lives, particularly as we age. They remind us of the joy, purpose, and fulfillment of nurturing these relationships. Pets teach us about love, resilience, and the beauty of living in the moment, lessons that are all the more precious in our active aging years.
