Elizabeth's GetSetUp Journey: Embracing Learning and Community

n a world where the pace of change is ever-accelerating, finding a community that supports learning and growth is truly valuable. Originally from Kerala but calling Chennai home for the past 22 years, meet Elizabeth, a 72-year-old retired nurse and Kotak Mahindra Bank account holder from Chennai. She shares how she discovered just such a community when she joined GetSetUp. 

"GetSetUp is a group that I thoroughly enjoy. Nowadays, with the modern generation and their technology, it's quite challenging for us to keep up. But at GetSetUp, I've learned to navigate most of these challenges. They really teach us well, understanding our level and starting from the basics. I spend a lot of my time there, at least 2 to 3 hours, engaging in various activities like dancing, singing, fitness, and technology, as well as cooking and crafts. I'm very happy about that."

Her story is not just about embracing technology but also about finding joy and connection. Dance sessions, in particular, hold a special place in Elizabeth's heart. “An experience I fondly recall on the platform is dance sessions, with choregrapher Sandip Soparkar. It was an outside dance form, and the choreographer, a gentleman, conducted it wonderfully. Only two or three of us signed up, and I was one of them. I'm eagerly looking forward to more such sessions. The way he taught was unique, and it was a pleasure to be part of that class.” Although, her interests don't stop at dancing. She is deeply involved in arts and crafts and enjoys cooking sessions. Technology, though sometimes challenging, is another area where she eagerly expands her horizons. "I'm slow on that but I have no complaints," she says, showing her resilience and eagerness to learn.

Being part of the GetSetUp community extends beyond the classes for Elizabeth. She is also an active traveler and has traveled to Kashmir with the community last year. "I did horse riding for the first time in my life, enjoyed local food with the community, and had a lot of fun with the various experiences offered on the Kashmir trip. The best part of it all, we made new friends."

Elizabeth echoes a sentiment that many active agers share, a want for connection and growth in a world that is rapidly evolving. "Joining GetSetUp was a delightful surprise for me. It's truly incredible to find a group dedicated to older adults, especially since we often face numerous challenges in many areas. With GetSetUp, I've found opportunities in so many areas and gained confidence." 

Elizabeth's journey with GetSetUp is a beautiful example of how age is no barrier to learning and how technology can bring people together, creating a community of empowered, active learners. Her story inspires us all to keep exploring, growing, and connecting, no matter our stage in life.
