arlier last month, I wrote about the importance of designing inclusive activities and events for active agers in the housing societies of today. Inclusive neighborhoods with activities for all ages enrich residents' lives, promote independent living, and empower active agers to stay vital in their community longer. When writing this piece, I knew I would soon be penning down thoughts on -the need for integrated real estate visions where urban housing considers older residents proactively.
When I came across an article written by Souptik Datta for MoneyControl, it got me thinking further. It is inspiring to witness prominent developers like Godrej Properties recognizing the evolving needs of active aging residents. Their venture into creating assets for senior living within projects where apartments are designed for older adults, reflects the growing demand for age-inclusive living spaces. This adaptation not only caters to the needs of older adults but also presents attractive opportunities for both homebuyers and developers. By diversifying their portfolios and embracing the concept of age-inclusive living, developers contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant community.
Let's look at a few facilities that go beyond the standard amenities and cater specifically to the comfort and convenience of active agers:
- Ramps for Accessibility: Instead of stairs, one consider incorporating ramps, making it easier for individuals with mobility issues to navigate the space comfortably.
- Disabled-Friendly Access Points: Ensure that access points, such as entrances and exits, are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility aids.
- Within Home Interiors: Falls are a major reason for injury among older adults and, unfortunately, can sometimes even lead to tragic outcomes. The choice of flooring materials, example, anti-skid surfaces, reduces the risk of slips and falls and provides a secure walking surface. In bathrooms, strategically placing grab bars offer stability and support, enhancing safety during daily routines.
- In-House Doctor Facility: Access to in-house doctor and nurse facilities ensures immediate medical assistance if needed, offering residents peace of mind.
- Overall Infrastructure around Society: Pay attention to seating, lighting, signage, and other design considerations that make spaces comfortable and usable for people of all abilities.
By structuring living choices in harmony with the diverse needs of active agers within cities, older adults can access facilities near their families, enhancing their overall quality of life. While senior-specific housing spaces today do fill needs, integrated developments foster cross-generational bonds through shared spaces. Beyond amenities, residents find community - interacting, learning from one another, and building cohesion. Growing up, I experienced the benefits of having elders around me, and learning from them was an invaluable experience. Whether directly related to family or not, older adults offer profound insights into the wisdom and experiences that come with age.
Also, as we embrace the concept of #ageingIndia and witness the development of #100smartcities, urban spaces prioritizing age-inclusive design principles create environments that empower older adults to lead fulfilling, active, and healthy lives while fostering a sense of community and belonging.
