ging skin, with its stories and experiences, is a canvas of our lives. It tells tales of laughter, challenges overcome, and moments cherished. While aging is a natural process, our skin requires different attention and care; maintaining healthy and radiant skin is a powerful way to support our skin’s health and can significantly enhance our confidence and well-being. Today, with the plethora of skincare products available in the market, it's easy to feel overwhelmed about the best product to choose. However, sometimes, the best solutions are found right in our own kitchens, as we learn from our community members, Rekha and Elizabeth, who share with us their skincare routine and offer invaluable insights into the world of DIY skincare.

Rekha R.

Rekha, born into modest beginnings, learned the value of natural remedies early on, exploring her mother's kitchen for skin care solutions, “I have been very particular about my skin and hair since childhood. This gave me a direction to search for the best option from my mom’s kitchen,” she shares. Rustogi's daily skincare routine revolves around homemade treatments, avoiding chemical-based products altogether, "I regularly apply my homemade hair oil and hair mask every day. I don't use soap for washing my face; I use a Multani Mitti pack. I also apply a face mask at least twice a week. Sometimes, I use rice starch and egg white as well. "Her approach reminds us that beauty and wellness need not always be expensive.

Rekha R.

Rekha shares that the first thing one needs to remember with skincare is to understand one’s skin type before using DIY treatments. “Before using any DIY, one must know their skin type because everything does not suit everyone. Not every ingredient suits everyone, so it's crucial to know how to use them safely. Sometimes, if we apply lemon directly on the face, it can cause itching or damage to the skin. It is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of using natural products." She also emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and protection from direct sunlight: “Maintain a healthy diet, use kitchen ingredients for skin and hair. Never directly expose your skin and hair to sunlight between 12 and 4 PM.”

One of Rekha's favorite kitchen ingredients is cinnamon, which is renowned for its numerous health benefits. "Cinnamon is my favorite one," she shares. "It's useful for your skin and overall health." Rich in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, cinnamon can work wonders for the skin, combating aging and promoting a radiant complexion.

For Rekha, skincare is not just about outward appearance but also inner health. She advocates for using ingredients that are not only beneficial for the skin but also promote overall well-being. "My skin is very sensitive, and most chemical-based products don't suit me," she explains. "That's why I explored my kitchen. I succeeded after using all my homemade remedies for my skin and hair. If I could give my younger self any skincare advice, it would be to take a healthy diet and use kitchen ingredients for skin and hair. Never expose your skin and hair directly to sunlight, especially between 12-4 pm,” Rustogi advises.

Elizabeth J.

Meet Elizabeth, a vibrant 73-year-old who defies age with her spirit of being young at heart. Her youthful appearance often surprises others, and she shares how she has a circle of friends spanning generations. For her, skincare equals consistency and persistence, and she believes in the power of kitchen ingredients for maintaining healthy and glowing skin.

Elizabeth J.

Her routine consists of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, emphasizing the importance of a simple yet effective regimen. Highlighting the benefits of natural remedies over store-bought products, she shares, "Home-made treatments are natural, which will not damage the skin. Everyone can do them at home at their convenience,”. She further busts common misconceptions about skincare, “Thinking that acne is only for teenagers, believing that overwashing the face helps with oily skin, assuming anti-aging products are not necessary until you reach 40, and insisting that steaming before a facial is always beneficial are not true. One should read up online or speak to a skincare expert to learn more. ”

Starting your skincare journey can be overwhelming, but with a simple routine tailored to your skin's needs, you can achieve remarkable results. Elizabeth shares, "To begin, understanding your skin type is crucial. Next, learn which natural ingredients in fruits, vegetables, and oils best suit your skin's unique requirements. Then, set yourself up for a basic skincare regimen that typically starts with cleansing to rid the skin of impurities. Following this, toning helps to minimize open pores, preparing the skin for the next steps. Finally, sealing in moisture with a suitable moisturizer completes the routine, leaving your skin nourished and protected. Also, include scrubbing once a week," she suggests. "Consistency is key."

As Rekha and Elizabeth’s advice reflects, the journey through natural skincare is more than skin deep. It is about how we live our lives—mindfully, sustainably, and harmoniously with the natural world. It's about honoring the wisdom passed down through generations and, at the same time, embracing our paths to wellness and beauty.
